How can a Sports Massage help?
If we injure ourselves, our natural reaction is to rub the area which decreases the pain a little. This gentle massage will help to increase circulation and calm the neuromuscular response to pain caused by the incident.
The benefit of regular massage treatment is that it will aid you to recovery during tough training schedules. Massage will aid circulation as the techniques force blood and lymph fluid through the body. Replacing it with fresh cells to aid the recovery of the muscles.
Some injuries can occur from the overuse of a particular muscle. Overuse injuries often result in sore, painful and inflamed muscles. The body’s response is to guard the area by tightening muscles and the reducing range of motion. The therapist is able to identify the areas that are naturally tight or weak that could lead to an injury. This is performed through special tests for specific muscles
Massage will reduce the initial inflammation that leads to an overuse injury, it also straightens out fibres from the adhesions that occur from increased training. This allows the muscles that compensate for the injury to work productively.
One small note of caution is that there are a few situations where massage may do more harm than good. However, this isn’t for the athlete to worry about Any qualified massage therapist will know when they cannot help and you should be referred to another health professional.
