Sports therapy uses a range of therapeutic techniques for the prevention, recognition and treatment of minor sports injuries. It can also be used to provide support with people wanting to maintain and improve fitness.
A typical session will involve appraising the injury using a number of techniques including posture analysis, gait analysis, biomechanical assessment, as well as soft tissue assessment. The session itself may include soft tissue therapy, mechanical and electrical treatment, cooling or warming therapy and mobilisation.
Sports therapy may be used to address an extensive range of injuries. Sports therapy may also be found to be helpful in the mental preparation of athletes for sporting participation.
Sports Taping
Sports taping is a form of therapy that can help in many ways, you may see on televised sporting events that athletes and sports people have multi coloured tape fixed around their knees, shoulders, or the backs of their legs.
At RJM Therapy we use the world leader in sports tape and that is Rocktape, primarily because it has good adhesion qualities and that it’s available in different designs (available on request), the quality of the tape is superior to some products that can be purchased.
Event Massage
To follow on as a part of sports massage there is PRE and POST-EVENT massage. Here at RJM Therapy we can provide cover for Sports events to help prepare competitors get ready for sporting events.
A PRE-EVENT massage prepares the body for the sporting event or competition and can be adapted for the sporting discipline or personal preference. The techniques used are to stimulate the muscles, encourage blood flow and can be a treatment to relax prior to the event. This can be performed from 30 mins to 48 hrs before the event.
A POST-EVENT massage can be performed from 30 mins after the event up to 72 hours, the techniques used help to utilise blood flow and relax the muscles. Post -event massage can help to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (the dreaded DOMS), fatigue and tightness when performed with assisted stretches.
Myofascial Cupping
At the 2016 Olympics Michael Phelps, a world champion swimmer for the US, amazed people with strange bruises on his body. These were caused by a treatment called Myofascial Cupping.
The myofascial cupping technique focuses on the fascia – the spider web-like soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that covers the entire body, wrapping around muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, organs, nerves, and blood vessels.
When injured or overused through poor postural habits, repetitive strains etc, adhesions can form in this network of soft tissue, causing it to lose its flexibility, becoming tight and restrictive.
Myofascial cupping helps to lift and separate the fascia, reducing adhesions and helping to boost hydration, leading to benefits such as:
Assisting the body in maintaining Range of Motion in joints
Eliminating Myofascial Trigger Points and reducing pain linked to fascial adhesions
Helps to reduce inflammation
Helps to reduce the chance of injury.
Maintain functional soft tissue.
Myofascial Cupping uses plastic or silicone cups and vacuum suction to lift the skin inside the cups. The cups are placed on areas of the body that our therapist has identified as being able to benefit from the treatment. The cups do not cause pain; however, bruising may occur as the therapy helps to bring nutrient-rich blood to the injured area.
This treatment may be used as part of the therapy to help alleviate symptoms.
Run Coaching
Why a personalized running plan crafted by myself a sports therapist rather than a generic free one is beneficial?
Firstly, I would consider individual factors like your fitness level through assessments, previous injuries, and specific goals, ensuring optimal results while minimizing the risk of injury.
Secondly, I would tailor your workouts to your lifestyle, address weaknesses, and help increase strength, promoting balanced progress and long-term sustainability. Additionally, I can provide ongoing support, adjusting the plan to suit your needs to progress and feedback on workouts or potential injuries to get you to your goal.
